Your Journey Begins

Hello, new members!

We welcome you to Young Writers Online (YWO), and hope it will help you achieve whatever your writing goals may be. The site is very large, which means it can be a little overwhelming at first glance. This guide is to help you learn your way around.

In case you haven't registered yet, you'll need to do so if you want to participate in our community. There's no cost, and it won't take long. Join!

So, now that you're registered and are ready to start posting, we suggest you visit The Newbie Zone and get to know all the existing members. You can do this by clicking "New Thread."

Navigation Basics

This site is divided into 2 main parts:

The Community area is also our home page ( http://www.youngwritersonline.net/ ). It is for holding conversations, discussing current events, debating topics, etc.

The Literature area is for everyone to post their work and receive helpful comments. You can go to the Literature area by clicking the link at the very top of any page on this site.

Both of these areas are divided into many sections, each for specific kinds of topics. Here's a picture of three sections:


You can click on the section name to view everything in that section.

When you’re in a section, all the threads (literature and discussions) are listed. Click one to visit it.

Posting Basics

A thread is like a conversation. To start a new thread, you should click the "New Thread" button at the top-left of your screen. Make sure you do it in the proper section, though!

Here's what it looks like:

To participate in a conversation which already has a thread, click the "Reply" button at the top or bottom of that thread's page.

Here it is:

If you want to edit something you said in a post, click the Edit Post button in the bottom-right corner of it.



If you want to respond to one particular post in a thread, click the "Quote Button" in that post. A copy of that person's post will appear in your own post.

It looks like this:

To respond to multiple posts in particular, use the "Multi-Quote" option. Simply click the following button in all the posts you want to reply to:



When you have selected a post to quote, that button will change to this:



^ And then click the QUOTE button for the last post you want to quote. All the quoted posts will appear in your post.

Just remember to trim the quotes you're using. It can be an eyesore if you quote a message that is extremely long. If you trim the quote so it only includes the line(s) you want to reply to, the discussion will be much easier to follow.

Now that you've got the basics of posting down, it's time to learn about the User CP (Control Panel).

The User CP


This is the place where you can customize your YWO experience, as well as what information other members will see about you.

Edit Signature Your signature - if you enable it - is something that appears under every post you make. You can put text in it, as well as an image that you upload. Just remember, we don't like signatures that are humongous, nor do we like signatures that have colors that hurt people's eyes.

Edit Email and Password Simple enough. Here you can change your password and e-mail address. If you've forgotten your password, send an e-mail to the same address earlier in this guide, and we'll set everything straight.

Edit Profile Here you can edit information about yourself, including your birthday, instant messaging information, your blog/webpage address, and other stuff about you.

Edit Options This is a page of odd tidbits you can mess around with. "Use Invisible Mode" will prevent other users from seeing that you're online (staff members can still see you, though). You can turn off images if you have a slow computer, choose whether or not you want an e-mail notification when someone sends you a private message, etc.

Edit Avatar Your avatar is a small image that appears next to your name in all your posts. They can be no larger than 80 by 80 pixels. Please don't use any avatars people might see as offensive.

Edit Profile Picture Here you can upload a picture of yourself. It will be visible on your profile to other members. Guests cannot see it.

Private Messages Private Messages (PMs) are like little e-mails you can send to other members. PMs cannot be sent anywhere outside TW, though. You are allowed a maximum of 50 private messages - make sure you empty your inbox and outbox frequently. If it gets full, people won't be able to send you any more.

Subscribed Threads When you post in a thread, you can choose to subscribe to it. That means you'll be notified whenever someone posts in that thread. You can change the method you're notified by in your "Edit Options"

Event Reminders If you see an event on the calendar you want to be reminded of, you can add it to your reminders, and you'll be reminded when it comes near.

Contacts & Friends You can add people to your contact list. If you want to be someone's friend, you can send a friend request. If that person accepts, your avatars will appear on each other's profiles.
