The biweekly poetry contest has evolved! Welcome to the first monthly contest.

1. The Search, asclepias acida
you gave me a green stem to a yellow flower,
i said i wanted the sun, and you climbed a mountain
for a dandelion in bloom, white seed piercing the clouds;
you gave me a green stem to a wilting flower,
beneath an upturned crescent moon.

2. TIE!
sticky love, Julian

probably not even a poem, Derezzination
i always wonder what to do in online social situations.
Somehow I’m in a relationship with someone I’d rather not talk about
because I pressed the right buttons in the right order and those words made her
fall in love.

She says:
I fell in love with you long before we started to Skype and before Facebook kept me up to date on how little you do with your life, but I find that very interesting.

And I’m not really sure where she’s coming from.

She says:
I really think that it was actually love at first sight and that I just had this feeling, it was on a level that was unknown to me but your opening words to me were ones that set me up for life.

And I don’t even know what I said to her, probably ‘hey’, probably ‘hi’.

She thinks too much and we’re getting married now. I used one too many emoticons
at the wrong wrong time.

Our first child is called James and she wants another one but I just can’t handle how sly
those emoticons look, how some computer programming can show unintended expression.

I think about a divorce, but everything is online these days and I’ll probably end up being a bigamist by accident because when you're online no one can tell what tone of voice to read your writing in; i always layer words in a coat of anything far from sugar.

so I say ‘let me practice my people skills’ when asked if I want to go to James’ wedding reception because I don’t trust myself in big social situations and she just goes:
‘don’t be silly. You’ll be fine, look at us, we’re good. You’ve got plenty of friends, you’ll be fine, just charm them’.

I end up in bed with James’ wife’s sister. I am a very charming man.

3. Soonhyung, The Enchanted Muggle
my cousin’s voice was like the heavens

a gold flowing river
falling over every soul in the room,
making them churn in awe.

and me?

my heart stopped,

hearing his strong high B.
I didn’t know the song, but it touched me
because he sang it.

my mouth dropped open,
my mind buzzed.
I’d never heard him sing before:

I smiled at him.

his voice was the heavens.

other entries:

Life, Pony123

Life is a musical part without end
The violin’s wailing notes as a baby arrives
The deep booming of the bass drum as they toddle on their first steps
The flute’s happy solo turns up as a child plays in the garden
Then the slightly darker notes of a cello signal adolescence is here
The music fades ever so little as you hear a oboe playing behind the cello
Its solo is happy then sad, then happy again, could it be love?
Yes, It is love, and soon the oboist joins the trumpet for a wedding fanfare.
The violin then joins again and starts the sequence at the beginning

Friendship, Chrissy Noelle
People of every color
Should be able to get together
Become closer and enjoy
Your company, so don’t annoy!
For friendship to be a success
You need Love, Loyalty, and Truth, but not Stress!
Best friendships are true and promising
Also known to be ever lasting
So choose the best kinds of friends
the kind that will forever have love to send!

Rules etc:
⦿ Entries are due by midnight on the 28th. Use the time wherever you are for now; we may standardize it later.
⦿ There are three judges: Raconteur, Isis, and lalodragon. Please PM entries to ALL of the judges!
⦿ We offer no physical prizes but, as in the biweekly, the first place winner gets 5 thankpoints, the second place winner gets 3 thankpoints, and the third place winner gets 1. Every entry receives a critique!
⦿ Every month will have its own theme. Themes can come in many forms; let us know if you have a brilliant idea. This month the theme is...(dun-dun-dun)

An idea torn from Valentine's day, but we want you to tear it further. How many relationships are you in this month? Relationships between parents and children, between siblings, between author and character, between lovers of course; relationships between places (sister cities!), between ideas, between variables on a graph; symbiotic relationships; the relationship between God and man; the relationship between a man and his toothbrush. We want to see them all.

Maybe I'll enter. I like the relationship idea a lot (have we had it before? I don't remember).

Plus, no prelims then.
you can't beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.

Reminds me of Sylvia Plath complaining in some essay that novelists get to write about small details like toothbrushes, which poets can't do. Clearly we can.

Kanen: this is only your first draft.
Kanen: for her, it was her last.

Um, I don't think so. What if one person submitted two amazing ones? We couldn't award to both (I mean we need diversity in our results). It just doesn't seem fair to me-- we're picking from a small enough pool that one person with two poems has a hugely high chance.
You can totally ask other people, though, for advice/crits before submitting.

We're exactly halfway through the contest now -- two weeks to go!
