Looks like the due date is in January - not too late to write a poem!

Yah, I thought of that after I posted. I had barely skimmed over it and was in a hurry.
Anyhow, I'm joining!

THE WINNER!
is.......
Isis, with her poem,
Christmas Eve

Pears from storage hold each other on the windowsill and the last leaves
shake against the reeds. Cara Cara peeled in a droplet puff

fills the kitchen with the summer-hint that only citrus can bring,
the hint that winter, alas, is just beginning. For years

we didn't do 'the Christmas orange thing', as my sister calls it,
her fingers digging into a pitted rind. But some things are better

after being away. Dizzy Gillespie spools out of the trumpet.
And despite the rasp that escapes with it,

dad's cheeks puffed, the sound starts to spill through the house.
Tonight it might rise over the windowsill and out

into the neighborhood, bright and tinny as the icicle lights
that hint through the thicket of bare trees.

For now, the sound is splayed and sharp, like the smell of an orange.
The dog eyes it, the braying of an animal he does not trust,

the way he looked at me yesterday before thundering
down the stairs to wedge between my knees. An almost stranger. Younger

and stranger, I wondered what was left for me to celebrate
besides the turning of the earth back towards the sun

when all I had in me was earth and suns, no voice from on high,
no paternal hand on the small of my back. Early in our life's journey

I found myself alone in a dark wood, but unlike Dante
or Don Draper I had no path to return to. Only the wood

stretched around me, echoing with the strictures I hoped
to shake off, the idea of sin like wet leaves that would not fall.

Now, finally, the wood is far behind me, a wet smudge. Celebrating the earth
does not feel like an only, even in the darkest weeks of winter.

The moss spreads under the snow. The geese honk south,
joining the trumpet in its long bebop solo

that seems to say, think of the life seething around you
and the stars just emerging from their sleep above.
