This was posted in my uni's submission and comps Facebook page for anyone with younger siblings/kids, and I thought it sounded like something a few of the younger members here might endeavour to have a go at. HarperCollins is a biggg publisher, and this looks like a great little book, and a fantastic opportunity for the winner. I would totally enter this if I wasn't too old to do so.

We are looking for the 12th short story to go into our winter-themed story collection. Your story will sit alongside those from authors as beloved and bestselling as John Boyne, Eoin Colfer, Roddy Doyle, Derek Landy, Judi Curtin, Marita Conlon McKenna and many more, and will be illustrated by the Irish Children’s Laureate, Niamh Sharkey!

The competition is open to 8-16-year-olds and your entry should be 1,500 words or more (5,000 max.) and appropriate for readers aged 8-10.

If you are selected to be our 12th short story not only will your story be published, but your school will win 250-worth of books for the school library. You and 4 other shortlisted entrants will also be invited to the Book Launch in London.

Closing date for entries is Midnight on 30th June 2014.

The prize for the winner is to have their story edited by the HarperCollins editorial team, and printed as the twelfth story in the hardback collection titled “Beyond the Stars”, which will publish on or around 6th November 2014. The winner will have their story illustrated by the Irish Children’s Laureate. The winner will also be invited to the launch party for “Beyond the Stars”, which will take place on a date and in a London location, both of which will be determined closer to the time. The winner will be able to bring one parent or guardian with them to the party. The winner’s school will receive a selection of HarperCollins books worth 250 for their school library. The winner will also be given the chance to come into the HarperCollins offices and have lunch with the editor of the book, Sarah Webb, as well as with HarperCollins Children’s Books Publishing Director Ruth Alltimes.

The winner will need to be available and willing to work with the editorial team at HarperCollins during July and August 2014, to complete the editorial process for their short story.
